Last week we welcomed Sande Brown and Cathy Peterson from the North Coast Paddling Club Dragon Boat Team for an inspiring presentation. The club was
founded in 2023 by former Rotarian Sheila Roley and Sande Brown (retired educators with the Seaside School District) after a year of work to establish nonprofit
status. Interest was immediate, with 45 people attending the first meeting, and the team is now 60 members strong and preparing for its third season. As part of the
Pacific and International Dragon Boat Associations, the club participates in a sport with more than 2,000 years of history and a strong tradition of inclusivity and
community. Sande and Cathy highlighted the many benefits of dragon boating – exercise, time outdoors, teamwork and lasting friendships. The club practices on the
John Day River, 3 days a week, from April through October and will compete in four races this summer. With members ranging in age from 26 to 76, the team
welcomes a wide variety of participants. As a proud member myself, I can say firsthand that this organization is truly life-changing. Thank you to Sande and Cathy for
sharing their passion and enthusiasm with Rotary.
